Spain deployed hundreds more troops and awaited EU reinforcements, as wildfires tore through the country due to what the prime called a climate emergency.

Spain is deploying 500 more soldiers to battle fast-spreading wildfires, as a brutal heatwave and strong winds leave nearly the entire country at extreme risk. Fires have already scorched land equal to the size of London and killed seven people.

Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez pledged to forge a national "climate pact” on the climate emergency, after returning from his vacation to visit the fire-hit northern region of Galicia where multiple blazes forced the closure of rail and road links to Madrid.

Temperatures remain high across southern Europe with wildfires also affecting Portugal, Greece, France and the Balkans.
