The cardinals have gathered in Vatican City to choose the 267th pope. St Peter, regarded as the first pope, was elected around 30AD. In the morning, cardinals will take part in a mass in St Peter’s Basilica. Later, in the afternoon, the cardinals will walk in a procession along the Via delle Fondamenta to the Sistine Chapel.

The wait for a new pope goes on after black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel following the first secret vote as the conclave began.A group of 133 cardinal electors began their behind-closed-doors meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Black smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney Wednesday evening, indicating that no pope was elected on the conclave's 1st ballot.
