The fires have ravaged small, sparsely populated towns in the country's northwest, forcing locals in many cases to act as firefighters. About 2,382 square miles have burned across Spain and Portugal.

In August 2025, Spain is experiencing one of its worst wildfire seasons in over 30 years. Around 20 large fires have erupted nationwide, fueled by high temperatures and dry conditions, resulting in at least four deaths and thousands of evacuations.
