Enola Gay was the name of the B-29 aircraft that dropped the world's first atomic bomb used in war on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. The pilot handpicked the name, honoring his mother, the night before the mission.

In addition to removing photos of a Medal of Honor recipient, some of the photos in the military's DEI purge seemed to be included just because the caption included the word "gay," even as a last name.

References to the aircraft—which dropped the first war-time atomic bomb—were flagged for removal from Pentagon photos and online posts as part of a DEI purge, presumably because of the word “gay.”

Private 1st Class Harold Gonsalves received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroic actions during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
