U.S. immigration officials say they intend to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, after he declined an offer to be deported to Costa Rica in exchange for remaining in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia could be deported to Uganda early next week, according to court documents— just days after the Maryland resident was released following five months behind bars, including a mistaken expulsion to a mega-prison in his native El Salvador.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been reunited with family and plans to travel to Maryland before returning to Tennessee in January for his criminal trial.
