Federal officials are investigating Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated then-candidate Donald Trump before his reelection to a second term.

President Trump and his allies have — without offering evidence — accused Smith of violating the Hatch Act, a federal law that bans certain public officials from engaging in political activity.

The investigation comes after GOP Sen. Tom Cotton requested that Smith be investigated for “unprecedented interference in the 2024 election.”
