West Virginia National Guard troops are now being sent to Washington, DC, in an escalation of President Donald Trump’s efforts to federally take over law enforcement in the city.

The White House said there were 45 arrests in the city Wednesday night, including 29 arrests of people living in the country illegally.

West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio are sending several hundred National Guard troops to Washington to bolster the federal deployment that President Donald Trump has ordered in his effort to reduce crime in the nation’s capital.

West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey announced the deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., at the Trump administration’s request.

Fueling the protests were concerns about Trump overreach and that he had used crime as a pretext to impose his will on Washington.

One key party not be in attendance Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump said after his meeting with the Russian president that he would call Zelenskyy and update him on the talks.

Citing a crime emergency, Trump invoked emergency powers Monday under the Home Rule Act to begin exerting control over the MPD as he also deployed the National Guard.

"I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice -- NO LONGER," Bondi said in a social media post.

"He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn't think it's funny today because we charged him with a felony, assault on a police officer," U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said.
