SEOUL (Reuters) - Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho said on Thursday he was proud of how his fellow South Koreans had overcome the fallout from impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived imposition of martial law on December 3.

In his latest film Mickey 17, his first since Parasite, he weaves science fiction with comedy to tell the story of Mickey Barnes, a former pastry chef who finds himself in the unusual predicament of having to die for a living.

Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho found it a relatively easy choice to cast Robert Pattinson as the titular character in his latest film "Mickey 17."

Director Bong recalled, "The day of the meeting was fun. When he walked into the cafe, he really looked like Mickey. He seemed somewhat wronged," to which Pattinson quipped, "You didn’t think, 'He really looks stupid' or something like that?" which drew laughter.

Director Bong Joon-Ho says audiences will “get a huge mixture of different emotions” out of Mickey 17’s dark comedy.

With his latest sci-fi opus Mickey 17, Bong Joon-ho is bringing back the same thing that made his last cinematic journey into the future such a gem.
