Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred ended the lifetime bans of several deceased former major leaguers on Tuesday. Among those reinstated were two of the best hitters in the history of baseball,

Rose agreed to be placed on the permanently ineligible list in 1989, and two years later the Hall of Fame passed a rule stating that those on the permanently ineligible list were not eligible for election into the Hall. As such, Rose has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that players punished with permanent ineligibility will be reinstated after their deaths, and the Hall of Fame said it would consider such players for inclusion.
